The department of Orbit and Oculoplasty deals with the diseases of the socket of the eye (orbit), eyelids and tear drainage (lacrimal) system. Diseases of the ear, nose and throat can also affect these structures. Common diseases affecting the orbit are tumors which can cause protrusion of the eyeball (proptosis). Eyelid problems like inversion (inturning), eversion (outturning) and drooping can occur due to lid muscle laxity due to aging and nerve weakness. The tear drainage passage can get blocked causing stagnation of fluid in the tear sac and secondary infection (dacryocystitis) manifested by constant tearing and swelling in the inner corner of the eye.
