The department of neuroophthalmology deals with vision disorders arising from the diseases of the optic nerve and the brain. The eye is a peripheral sensory organ for vision and is an extension of the brain. It perceives visual impulses and sends the signals to the brain for recognition and appreciation of the image seen by the eye. Thus some disorders of the brain can involve the visual nerve fibers and lead to eye muscle weakness and vision loss.
