Glaucoma is a condition where raised fluid pressure in the eye causes progressive damage to the optic nerve and gradual loss of vision eventually leading to blindness. Rise in fluid pressure can occur due to an inherent abnormality (open angle) or obstruction (closed angle) of the drainage channels of the eye. The damage to optic nerve may be completely silent, hence the need to specifically screen for this condition. Certain medications (steroid eye drops) and ocular injury can also lead to glaucoma.
Glaucoma can occur at any age and may affect even children and newborns. People with a positive family history and associated disorders like diabetes, high/ low blood pressure and myopia are particularly at risk.
